Putting patients in splints after surgery for hand and arm problems is common - I recommend splinting for almost all my patients after surgery - but not after carpal tunnel release! How Is Carpal Tunnel Surgery Done?
Anatomically speaking carpal tunnel is a conduit for the median nerve and the flexor tendons, formed by the carpal bones and the flexor retinaculum. In the case carpal tunnel syndrome, an entrapment that occurs when the median nerve at the wrist is compressed by either of the following; thickened flexor tendon sheath, skeletal encroachment, edema, or a soft tissue mass. The cause of carpal tunnel syndrome is related to repetitive movements performed by the hands and wrist. It is also associated with different condition such as pregnancy, arthritis or even hypothyroidism. Several treatments are given to those whose CTS not severe. The management for CTS include; splinting, activity modification, balanced diet, exercise and medications. However, if it doesn't respond to any of the above-mentioned management carpal tunnel surgery is the last option.
